One day, soon after Christmas, Katy and Daniel come home from school and Mummy says, “I had a visitor today. Mrs Millburn came to ask if you are both still interested in singing in a choir.”

They look excited and Katy says, “That would be fun. We enjoyed our Christmas carols singing very much.”

They go to see Mrs Millburn, who used to be a music and singing teacher. They tell her that they would like to sing in a choir very much.

“I thought is would be good to have both grown-ups and children in the same choir,” says Mrs Millburn

“Just like our carol singing,” says Daniel.

Mrs Millburn asks Katy and Daniel to tell all their friends who would like to sing to be at the Village Hall tomorrow evening, “And I will ask all their parents to come,” says Mrs Millburn.

The next evening there is an excited crowd at the Village Hall. Mrs Millburn is a very good singing teacher. She puts all the different sounding voices into groups. Then she says that with grown-ups and children together she thought the best thing to sing would be folk songs like ‘D’ye Ken John Peel’ and ‘Widecombe Fair’.

Mrs Millburn hands out music and they all have a very good sing together. They sing at home so that, when they meet every two weeks, they know the songs and can sing together much better.

One day Mrs Millburn says she would like them to give a concert for the whole village. Everyone feels a bit nervous about this idea, but they agree.

The Village Hall is packed on the day and the concert goes very well.

At the next choir rehearsal after the concert Mrs Millburn says that the Mayor of the nearby town was at the concert and would like them to sing at his concert to raise money for the local Hospice.

They all agree to take part and, even though they are very nervous with such a large audience, they enjoy the concert very much.

On the way home Mummy says to Katy and Daniel, “Just think! This all started because you wanted to make last Christmas happy for me by singing carols in the garden!”
