Katy Daniel and the Sandcastle Competition

Katy and Daniel are on holiday at the seaside. Every day they play on a lovely sandy beach and paddle in the sea.

One day Mummy tells them that, on the next day, there will be a sandcastle building competition. Katy and Daniel decide to enter the competition, and spend all day practicing making sandcastles.

Next day one area of the beach is set aside for the competition. Katy and Daniel are very pleased with the castle they are making but, just as it is nearly finished, a very naughty boy jumps on the castle and smashes it.

“That was a horrible thing to do,” says Daniel.

“It is only a lump of old sand,” says the naughty boy.

Poor Katy starts to cry because there is little time to make a new castle. Some of the other children, who have finished their castles, say they will help Katy and Daniel  build another. With all the help they soon make a very lovely castle just in time.

The judges look carefully at all the castles and say that the winner is – Katy and Daniel!

Katy says they cannot have the prize because of all the help they had in rebuilding it. She tells the judges the whole story. The judges award the prizes. They then talk together and make a special award for the best castle made by a team, and give this to Katy and Daniel.

Every child who has entered the competition is then given an ice cream.

In the queue for an ice cream is the naughty boy. One of the children tells the judge that the naughty boy does not deserve an ice cream because he jumped on Katy and Daniel’s castle.

“What do you think?” asks a judge, turning to Katy and Daniel.

Daniel looks at the naughty boy and sees how sad he looks. “He can have one,” says Daniel.

So the naughty boy gets an ice cream. He then looks at Daniel and says, “I am sorry about what I did to your castle. I just felt jealous because I was not in the competition, and I knew that I could not make such a good castle.”

They see the naughty boy the next day, and discover that he is not really as bad as they had thought.
