Katy and the Blackbird

Every day Katy feeds the birds in her garden. Her Mummy gives her seeds and nuts. She puts these on a bird table near the back door. She enjoys watching the birds – sparrows, blue-tits, chaffinches, a robin and a blackbird.
One day Katy dropped some seeds, and the blackbird hopped right up to Katy’s feet and ate them up. Next day Katy put a few seeds on the ground and the blackbird was there to eat them up. She became very good friends with this blackbird, and he would wait by the back door for Katy. Sometimes he would even eat out of Katy’s hand.
Each evening the blackbird would perch on a bush at the bottom of the garden and sing a lovely song. Mummy said he was singing to say thank you for the food.
One day Katy did not feed the birds. The blackbird tapped on the back door, but still Katy did not come. Katy was poorly. She was so poorly that she did not want to eat anything and she did not want to play. Mummy tucked her up in bed.
The blackbird flew round the house and saw Katy tucked up in bed. Do you know what he did? He sat on a branch of a tree outside Katy’s window and sang to her. Each day he would sing to Katy. This cheered her up and soon she was well again.
The first thing she did when she was well was to put out some food for the blackbird. He hopped up to Katy, picked up the food, cocked his head on one side and Katy was sure that he winked at her before he flew away.
