Katy, Daniel and the Icy Pond

Katy and Daniel wake up to find a thick covering of frost over everything – the trees, the walls, the grass. The sun is shining and everywhere is sparking like diamonds. It looks like fairyland.
After breakfast Mummy asks Katy and Daniel to take their dog, Vic, for a walk. They go down the lane to the village green. On the village green there is a pond, which is frozen over. Daniel puts his foot on the ice and hears a crack. The ice is not thick enough to take his weight.
Daniel picks up a stone and skims it over the ice. It bounces over the ice with echoey sounds. Vic thinks this is a good game and he bounds over the ice to catch the stone, but….CRASH…..Vic falls through the ice into the freezing water.
Katy and Daniel cannot go onto the ice to rescue Vic because they would fall through the ice into the water. Daniel has an idea. He runs to the village shop, which is close to the pond, and tells Mr Elliot, the shopkeeper, what has happened. He asks if he can borrow a ladder. Mr Elliot carries the ladder to the pond.
They lay the ladder over the ice next to the hole in the ice and next to Vic. Mr Elliot holds tightly onto one end of the ladder, and Daniel crawls very carefully along the ladder to Vic. He pulls Vic out of the water and Mr Elliot pulls the ladder safely back over the ice to the shore.
Poor Vic is so cold he does not even have the energy to lick Daniel to say thank you.
Mr Elliot takes them all back to his shop, and his wife takes them into their sitting room at the back of the shop. Here there is a roaring fire. She gives Katy a towel to dry Vic, who soon recovers from his bad experience. She gives Katy and Daniel a mug of hot chocolate each, and soon they are all warm and happy.
Katy and Daniel thank Mr and Mrs Elliot and go home to tell Mummy all about their adventure, and Vic gives a wag of his tail.
